From lively folk music, to hot barbecue, chain saw carvers and kids’ art, Union Parish Folk Life Day on Saturday, May 6 will be packed with family fun. The event will be presented by the Union Museum of History and Art-Discovery Place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at 211 N. Main Street, Farmerville. Admission is free.
The Town of Farmerville Haywagon Stage will feature foot-tapping music by the Piney Hills Bluegrass Band, guitarist Zeb Payne, pan drum musician Margie Albritton, “America’s Got Talent” blues musician Robert Finley, and the Holmesville Baptist Church Gospel group, and dancing by students of The Dance Studio of Union Parish. Mike Duty will emcee.
Other features of the festival will be handmade crafts demonstrations by chain saw carver Brian Cockerham, pine needle basket-maker Patti Hendricks, net-weaver Bubba Kenly, fiber spinner Aleatha Shannon, quilter Karen Bradford, wood bowl maker Audie Maxey, and many other talented people. Vendors will offer items for sale, including live plants, jewelry, toys, handmade aprons and purses, soap, pottery, and artworks. Volunteers with Union Parish Community Outreach will have a kids’ art tent where youngsters can create their own crafts.
Food vendors will offer a bounty of festival favorites including boudin balls, fried chicken, barbecue, tamales, and snow cones.
